Dominic Stricker has reached the second round of the ATP 250 tournament in Winston-Salem (USA). The Bernese (ATP 182) defeated the Argentinian Federico Coria (ATP 78) 7:5 and 6:2 in his first match. At 3:4 in the first set, Stricker was in trouble but managed to save a break chance. Shortly after, he took the second break chance and then took the match into the dry spell. In the second round, the Swiss won the match with a break of 2:1 and 5:2. Stricker won a match in the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time this year after serious back problems. His next opponent is the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 58).
US Open: Walter and Teichmann advance to first qualifying round
Simona Waltert has reached the second qualifying round of the US Open. At the start of the tournament, the Graubünden woman (WTA 213) defeated American Emina Bektas 6:4, 6:4 in 1 minute and 26 seconds. Waltert’s next opponent is British player Sonai Kartal (WTA 175). Jil Teichmann also went further. The world No. 203 fought hard for almost three hours and finally defeated local hero Maria Matyas (WTA 194) 3:6, 7:6 (7:5), 6:4. Teichmann will now face Turkish player Zeynep Sandmes (WTA 152). However, Alexander Ritchard (ATP 137) was eliminated from the men’s ranking. The Zurich player lost to Italy’s Francesco Passaro (ATP 150) after winning the first set 7:5, 3:6, 3:6.
