Muscat: Twenty sailors from the Oman Sailing Youth Team took part in the first day of competition at this year’s Oman Sailing Championship, held at Mocha Beach in Sur Governorate from August 18 to 22. The sailors recently completed a summer camp in Ras Hadd in preparation for the event, where they will compete in the Optimist, ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 classes.
In addition to the Oman Sailing Team’s youth team, three optimistic sailors from the Kuwait Marine Sports Club will also compete in the championships, adding a new dimension to the event and promoting greater regional cooperation in the sport.
The 2024 Oman Sailing Championship is part of the Sur Maritime Sports Festival, hosted by the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Governor’s Office of South Al Shaqiya Governorate, and will take place on August 28.

Abdul Aziz al Shidi, Acting Sailing Director of the Oman Sailing Association, said: “We are very proud to host the Oman Sailing Championships during the Sur Sea Sports Festival and to inspire young Omanis by promoting the potential of sailing and sharing sailing with a wider audience. The 20 sailors selected for the championships are the top young sailors in our program and will represent Oman in national and international sailing competitions in the coming months.”
Sultan al Zadjali, Assistant Head Coach of the Oman Sailing Team Youth, added: “Our training camp in Ras Had provides ideal preparation for this event and upcoming regattas, giving our sailors the opportunity to perform at the highest level. We are looking forward to the Oman Sailing Championships and to entertaining visitors to the Sur Sea Sports Festival over the coming week.”
Following the conclusion of the 2024 Oman Sailing Championship, members of the Oman Sailing Youth Team will travel to Tekirdag, Turkey, to participate in the 8th International Suleyman Pasha Optimist Cup Regatta from September 1 to 5. The annual event attracts sailors from Southeast Europe, North Africa and West Asia, and this year the Turkish delegation is expected to participate again.
The Oman Sailing Association will then host the 13th Muthanna Sailing Week at the Barceló Muthanna Resort from October 1 to 8, where teams will compete in the Optimist and ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes, as well as the Para Inclusive RS Venture Connect class, with sailors from all over the region.
