A Tongan grandfather has been identified as the victim of a shooting in Pakuranga, a suburb east of Auckland, yesterday morning. The victim, identified as Saia Kokohu Vi, was allegedly shot inside a car on Marvon Downs Ave.

Around 6:45 a.m., police were called after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. Police arrived at the intersection of Marvon Downs Ave and Pixie Pl and found a person injured in a vehicle. Unfortunately, the victim died at the scene from his injuries.

Detective Sergeant Kerry Watson described the situation as a “critical incident” and stressed that police were deploying significant resources to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. “It will take us some time to piece together what happened,” Watson said, highlighting the complexity of the ongoing investigation.

Residents reported at least 14 police cars and several armed police officers at the scene. Ambulances and the Police Hawk helicopter were also involved in the incident. Armed police have cordoned off the area and there is a heavy police presence throughout the neighborhood.

Nearby Elm Park School released a statement assuring parents and staff that the school was safe. Principal Sarah Baleicakau confirmed there was no immediate danger to the school and police had assured her that students were safe. “I have spoken to police this morning and have every confidence that the school can remain open,” Baleicakau added.

As the investigation continues, police are working to ensure the community is safe and gather information to determine who is responsible for this tragic incident.
