Thierry Henry, who led the host nation’s men’s football team to a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, has resigned.

Henry had been head coach of the French U-21 national team for less than a year and was supposed to coach the team in the upcoming European Championship qualifiers, but he decided to resign for personal reasons.

“I thank the French Football Federation (FFF) and its president Philippe Diallo from the bottom of my heart for providing me with an incredible opportunity. Winning a silver medal at my home Olympics remains one of the proudest achievements of my life,” Henry said in a press release.

Henry’s contract lasted until the following June and his departure came as a surprise to the FFF president.

“We certainly regret this decision, as Thierry achieved the goal set for him and brought us a medal at the Paris Olympics. Following him over the past year, I could see his professionalism, consistency and love for our blue jersey. We wish him success in his future endeavors,” Diallo said.

France had to concede to Spain in extra time in Olympic final 5:3 Advantages.
