The move comes against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with the country, during which the country’s president, Gustavo Petro, announced that the country would sever ties with Israel due to the ongoing war in Gaza. He further threatened to do so if a ceasefire is not reached in the fighting. “Before you, the Government of Change of the President of the Republic announces that tomorrow we will sever diplomatic relations with Israel because its government and its president support genocide,” Petro said.
As of now, the State of Israel has two power plants, located near Hadera and Ashkelon, both powered by coal. Due to the severe air pollution caused by coal, the Israeli government decided in the early 2030s to stop using coal for power generation in Israel and switch to much cleaner natural gas.
Following this decision, the Ministry of Energy announced that the Orot Rabin coal-fired power plants in Hadera and Rotenberg in Ashkelon will stop working completely by 2030 and will continue to serve only as backup plants. Although the timetable has been delayed, the power company has pledged to stick to the original schedule and stop using coal in Israel by the end of 2025.
