A luxury cruise ship sank after a tornado struck the coast of Sicily with 22 passengers on board, including a New Zealand citizen.
The local coast guard rescued 15 people, including New Zealanders, but the 56-metre-long vessel was reported to have sunk at 5am local time (3pm NZT) with seven others missing.
Italy’s ANSA news agency reported that firefighters and divers reached the wreck, the Bayesian, and found a body 49 meters underwater, half a mile off the coast of Porticello.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) spokesperson confirmed at least one New Zealander was involved.
“The New Zealand Embassy in Rome is responding to this matter… The Embassy is working with local authorities to clarify further details,” the spokesperson said.
