A 15-meter-long sperm whale has been lying on the shore of Lake Zurich since Monday morning as part of a three-day art event by the artist collective Captain Boomer, who was invited by Zurich’s Spektakel Theater and the marine conservation organization KYMA.

The press release goes on to say that the “clearly absurd and emotional” images of a beached whale on the shores of Lake Zurich are intended to raise public awareness of environmental damage, species disappearance and threats to natural habitats.
A marine biologist from KYMA is quoted in the press release as saying that the installation symbolically shows that Switzerland must do its part to protect the oceans, because despite the presence of treatment plants, the chemicals used here and the microplastics are all found in rivers and therefore in the sea.
