A 50-meter-long sailboat with 22 people on board sank in the waters near the Sicilian capital early Monday morning PalermoAccording to Italian media reports, four British people are among the seven missing.

Italian coast guard and firefighters rescued 15 people, including a child, after a cyclone and rough seas hit the British-flagged vessel at sunrise, causing it to sink.

According to Adnkronos news agency, there were two British and French citizens, an Irishman, a New Zealander and a Sri Lankan on board, while the rest were British.

Adnkronos said the 15 people rescued were in stable condition.

Fire department divers were continuing their search around the vessel, which was about a half-mile from shore.

The UK Foreign Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
