African stateswoman, educator, humanitarian and widow of former South African President Nelson Mandela, Dame Graca Machel, will visit Barbados from Wednesday 21st August to Monday 26th August.
Mrs. Machel’s visit coincides with the liberation season in Barbados and she will attend a number of related events during her visit. She plans to visit the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, attend a Barbados/Africa networking event and meet South Africans living in the country. She also plans to meet with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and other government officials.
During her six-day visit, Dame Graca will explore key sites related to Barbados’ intangible cultural heritage, including historic Bridgetown and its garrison, the Liberator Statue, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Liberty Village and Golden Square Liberty Park.
She will also learn about the “Story of Sugar and Rum,” an important aspect of the island’s history.
The highlight of her visit will be taking part in a discussion entitled ‘In the Words of Dame Graça Machel: Reflections on the Path to Freedom’ which will take place at 6.30pm on Friday 23 August in the Frank Collymore Hall.
The event was held to mark the United Nations International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
Dame Graca Machel, who previously served as First Lady of Mozambique and one of the country’s Ministers of Education, has a long history of advocating for women’s rights and the well-being of children.
In recognition of her significant contributions to promoting the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents, she was awarded the World Health Organization’s highest honor, the WHO Gold Medal, in 2018. (Beijing Geographic Information System)
