Blantyre City Council has partnered with private sector company Jura Adventures to build a K4 billion leisure centre in the commercial city. Promoted by the Public Private Partnership Committee (PPPC).
The contract between Blantyre City BCC and Jura Adventures has been formally signed.
The partnership aims to build recreational centres such as children’s amusement parks and improve infrastructure development in the commercial city of Blantyre.
PPPC Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Kabambe, said at the signing ceremony in Blantyre that the Commission was pleased to witness the collaboration between the two parties, noting that such agreements were expected to bring immense benefits to the City of Blantyre and its residents.
Mr Kabembe said the PPPC has the responsibility to promote and oversee viable and sustainable partnerships between the public and private sectors in Malawi to ensure that such collaborations are structured transparently and beneficial to all stakeholders, promoting economic growth through the creation of quality infrastructure and the provision of public services.
“This contract is significant as it will bring more positive outcomes to Blantyre’s infrastructure development, thereby boosting Blantyre’s economic development and potentially creating more jobs for local residents and attracting cross-border tourists,” he said.
“Once completed, the project will not only improve the lives of Blantyre residents but will also have an impact on the city’s economic situation and environment,” Kabambe added.
Kabembe said the true measure of success lies in the results such partnerships produce, revealing that the Commission is working on a streamlined strategy to make such public-private partnerships work for the benefit of all Malawians.
Blantyre Council Chief Executive Officer, Denis Chinsai said the Council looks forward to urbanisation in line with Malawi’s Agenda 2063, creating quality infrastructure in Blantyre City and helping to enhance the social life experience of families and youth in the city, the country and the world.
“We hope that the construction of beautiful parks and recreation centres in Blantyre will help bring more entertainment to families and children who choose to visit these centres in the near future. This development has the potential to change the mindset of the youths and keep them busy and avoid stress, anxiety and other unethical behaviours,” Chinsai said.
He said the facility would complement the council’s efforts to ensure the city was green and beautiful, thereby contributing to the development of the state.
In his speech, Charles Zimba, Chairman of the Board of Jura Adventures, the company responsible for building the entertainment center and children’s amusement park in Blantyre, said that these facilities will meet the needs of children and adults, ensure the social development of children, and provide adults with an unforgettable leisure experience.
“Our main goal is to bring more family-friendly and educational activities to Blantyre residents by building quality infrastructure so that people can use their leisure time productively,” Zimba said.
He added that the facilities will help attract domestic and foreign tourists, thereby boosting Malawi’s tourism industry, adding that the project will also create jobs in Blantyre during its construction.
Zimba revealed that the contract agreement with BCC is expected to be completed within 12 months.
