August 18, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan will send a government delegation to Cairo for talks with US and Saudi officials on the implementation of an agreement aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan, a government source told Sudan Tribune on Sunday.
Sudan’s Sovereignty Council will send a delegation to Cairo following contacts with the U.S. and Egyptian governments, the council confirmed in a statement on Sunday.
The delegation was led by Mines Minister Mohammed Bashir Abu Namo and included Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Salwa Adam Baniya as well as military negotiators.
The Cairo talks are expected to take place on Tuesday.
Earlier, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s ruling council, told reporters on Saturday that the United States had agreed to Sudan’s request for a meeting to discuss the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration, a ceasefire agreement signed in May between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Officials also said a delegation had travelled to Geneva.
The discussions followed consultations between Sudanese government and US officials in Jeddah last week, which failed to reach an understanding on the agenda and participants of the Geneva process.
In related developments, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister spoke by phone on Sunday with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss efforts to end the conflict in Sudan, according to the Saudi Foreign Ministry.
