The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division of the Ministry of Labour said it is currently investigating a workplace death that occurred on an unregistered land-based dredging vessel on Thursday, August 15, 2024, claimed by John Burrowes, 38, operating at Mahdia St. Elizabeth, Potaro Mine Area No. 2, Region Eight.
It is the latest in a string of workplace deaths, with the latest statistics showing a sharp increase in fatalities compared with the same period last year.
The deceased have been identified as 19-year-old Imran Blake, a student at Kuru Kuru College, Southdyke Highway, Linden, and 26-year-old Sherwayne Joseph.
According to reports, at about 06:00, Joseph, Black and six other miners left the camp to start their morning work. At about 23:15, while carrying out their work activities, their colleagues heard a rumbling sound. They saw that the mine wall began to collapse, so they sounded the alarm to alert others to evacuate the cave.
However, Joseph and Blake were unable to escape and were buried by the falling debris.
Based on these reports, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Officer Ray Hosannah and Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Safety Officer Irvie London visited the site to commence a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the accident and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
