It’s the first week of school and detectives with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Threat Management Unit (TMU) have arrested two students for two separate incidents involving Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). Detectives said they are also investigating two other threats against other Broward County schools that could lead to more arrests.
This arrest/investigation comes less than two weeks after Superintendent Dr. Gregory Toney reminded parents and students during a news conference that threats against the school are taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated.
“These are not jokes,” Sheriff Dr. Toney said. “If you make threats on social media or anywhere else … we will track you down and arrest you.”
According to reports on Saturday, August 10, TMU investigators received a tip from the FBI regarding a post on Snapchat by a 13-year-old boy. During the investigation, detectives learned that the student had posted a partial photo of himself, including a written threat to carry out a mass shooting at the BCPS office in Fort Lauderdale. Detectives said the student was upset about BCPS’s new student cell phone policy. That same day, police found the teen at his home in Weston and took him into custody.
On Thursday, August 15, TMU detectives received another tip from the FBI regarding a Broward County student making threats on Snapchat against Cooper City High School. Detectives said the threat investigation led to the arrest of a 13-year-old girl.

Under Florida law, the two students face a felony charge of making a written threat to kill, cause bodily injury, conduct a mass shooting or commit an act of terrorism, as well as an additional charge of using a two-way communication device to commit a felony.
“Unfortunately, this happens many times every year,” Sheriff Dr. Toney said in a news release. “Don’t let your children make the mistake of having a felony arrest on their record because they may never be able to get it off their record.”
