Vanuatu is preparing to make a bold move by bidding to host the 2031 Pacific Games in Port Vila. A formal proposal is expected to be made by the end of this year, when the government will send a high-profile delegation to Palau to formally submit its bid.
The Pacific Games Council will decide on the bid and this is an important opportunity for Vanuatu to showcase its potential as a host for this spectacular event. Despite the challenges, the Government remains optimistic and has strong support from leaders of neighbouring Melanesian countries and territories.
Last week, Vanuatu Sports Minister Tomke Netewonei held a key meeting in Paris with regional leaders to consolidate support for the bid. In attendance were Solomon Islands Sports Minister Isikeli Vave, New Caledonia Sports Minister Michal Forrest and Carnac’s representative in the French Senate, Senator Robert Sauve. The meeting strengthened the solidarity and support of these countries for Vanuatu’s ambitious plans.
Although Fiji and Tonga have also submitted bids to host the 2031 Pacific Games, Minister Netevone remains confident of Vanuatu’s chances. “Twenty-two countries are expected to send athletes and officials to the Games, which means a boost to our economic growth and the opportunity to showcase the beautiful land of Vanuatu to the world. I believe we have a chance of winning,” Netevone said.
Preparations are already underway and the ministry has identified land for potential stadiums. The event is expected to attract more than 4,500 to 5,000 athletes and officials (excluding supporters and families).
President of the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and President of the Vanuatu Sports Association and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC), Antoine Boudier, highlighted the potential economic benefits of hosting the Pacific Games. “The impact on local businesses, especially the tourism industry, could be significant,” said Boudier, recalling the positive economic knock-on effects of the last mini-Games, including an increase in demand for car rentals and a boom in the restaurant industry.
Mr Budir also stressed that hosting the Pacific Games will leave a lasting legacy, improving infrastructure and facilities to host future international events. He noted that Vanuatu’s sports tourism potential is untapped and said hosting the Pacific Games could position Vanuatu as a key player in this lucrative market.
Next year, the Pacific Mini Games will be held in Palau, with a delegation including the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Malvatu Mauri, youth and school representatives, as well as VASANOC and Minister Netvunei. Tahiti will host the 2027 Pacific Games.
