Meshawn Maddock, one of 16 criminally charged fake electors in Michigan and former co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party, has donated more than $1,800 to Trump this cycle. Tyler Bowyer, an accused fake elector in Arizona, has donated $645 to Republican candidates. David Hanna, a fake elector in Georgia who has not been criminally charged, has donated at least $25,000 to Trump this year alone.
“It’s extremely rare for a politician to accept campaign contributions from someone who’s been indicted,” said Michael Becker, research director at election watchdog group Issue One. The Guardian. “It’s usually not a good thing for a politician to accept money from someone accused of serious wrongdoing. Political candidates generally don’t want to be associated with a convicted or accused felon. Yet in some circles, it can be an honor to be associated with someone who served as a fake elector for Donald Trump in 2020.”
Republicans running in U.S. House races have also benefited from their ties to Trump and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, receiving campaign contributions from fake electors in their home states. In 2023, Arizona Rep. Eli Crane received $2,900 from Jim Lamon, one of the state’s 18 criminally charged co-defendants, and Rep. Yvette Herrell received more than $3,000 and $2,900 from a pair of fake electors in New Mexico.
