Mumbai: Indian medical staff on Saturday (August 17) began a nationwide 24-hour shutdown of non-emergency services in protest against Brutal rape and murder of a doctorLocated in the eastern city of Kolkata.
The suspension, which began at 6 a.m. local time, will cut off access to elective medical procedures and outpatient consultations in the world’s most populous country, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said in a statement.
The hospital’s emergency department, which handles critical situations, will continue to be staffed.
Last week, a 31-year-old intern was raped and murdered at a medical college in Kolkata where she worked. Protests spread across the country sexual assault among doctors and compared it to the infamous case of a 23-year-old student who was gang-raped and killed on a moving bus in New Delhi in 2012.
Anger over the failure of tough laws to stem rising violence against women has sparked protests by doctors and women’s groups.
“Women make up the majority of our industry in this country. We have demanded time and again that their safety be guaranteed,” IMA President RV Asokan told Reuters on Friday.
More than one million medical workers are expected to join the strike.
