In his congratulatory message to Brazilian President Lula da Silva on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations yesterday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China and Brazil are “good friends with similar aspirations.”

China and Brazil are both “important developing countries and important emerging market countries” and “good friends with similar aspirations” and should use the anniversary “as a new starting point for strengthening relations,” the official Xinhua news agency quoted Xi as saying.

In his message, Lula said that the Brazil-China relationship is “increasingly important for building a multipolar order and more equitable and effective global governance.” Xinhua News Agency also quoted Lula as saying: “The relationship between Brazil and China plays an important role in supporting the stability and predictability of the two countries and the world.”

China has been Brazil’s largest trading partner since 2008, according to official data, and the two countries have maintained close ties driven by the BRICS group of emerging economies, founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which since 2009 has advocated for a better status for representative developing countries in international organizations.

By 2023, the Chinese market will become the destination for 30% of Brazil’s exports, when sales to the Asian country will reach $104 billion, mainly consisting of food and raw materials. Chinese investment in Brazil remains at around $40 billion.
