Some Azimio leaders asked the judiciary to stand firm with Kenyans following what they called plans to reintroduce the rejected 2024 Finance Bill.
Leaders have warned that the country is heading down a dangerous path, and President William Ruto has reportedly vowed to resume aggressive tax measures.
The leaders, led by Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka, while addressing the press in Embu, said the judiciary remains the last line of defence for the people.
Other Azimio politicians include DAP (K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, Jubilee Party secretary general Jeremiah Kioni and former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu.
“President Ruto has said he will reintroduce the 2024 Finance Bill and these taxes will be placed before Parliament and with numerical superiority and control of Parliament, the judiciary is the last line of defence for Kenyans,” Wamalwa said.
“We need to pray for the judiciary because it is the only branch of government that has not been taken away.”
Meanwhile, the leader asked the youths to remain vigilant and not let their guard down, saying Azimio would join them in resisting the government’s brutality.
“We are not letting our guard down, and we are asking Gen Z not to give up. We know they are frustrated with what is happening, but we are asking them to take a generational approach to oppose these proposed taxes,” Wamalwa said.
Kalonzo warned that the government would resist any attempt to introduce tolls on Kenyan roads.
“If you want to collect tolls, build your own roads and collect tolls instead of charging tolls on the roads built by Kibaki and Uhuru,” Kalonzo said.
“If you collect tolls on Thika Road, you are robbing people’s pockets.”
