Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has left Zimbabwe for Italy and will later travel to Germany where he is expected to hold a series of discussions to drum up support for Malawi’s development agenda.

Chakwera left Zimbabwe via Robert Mugabe International Airport and is expected to fly first to Vatican City in Rome, where he will hold talks with Pope Francis and Cardinal Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

President Chakwera will then travel to Rome, Italy, to meet with heads of international agencies based in Rome to seek more support and partnerships to promote Malawi’s development.

From Italy, the president’s next stop will be the German capital of Berlin, where he will meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

During his visit to Berlin, President Chakwera will hold bilateral talks with his German counterpart to discuss a wide range of issues, including potential investment in modern vessel development on Lake Malawi.

Additionally, the President will meet with German government officials, business executives from the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce and representatives of a major German shipping company to explore ways to strengthen Malawi’s maritime infrastructure, which has fallen into disrepair over the years due to neglect by the previous political regime.
