Lebanon’s power outages hit the country on Saturday night, with the last power station shut down due to fuel shortages. The government said: “After exhausting all possible options to expand energy production, the last power station has stopped operating and power is out across the country.” Beirut Airport said it would continue to operate with the help of generators and urged citizens to save water.
The move will affect private consumers and infrastructure such as ports, water supplies, prisons and sanitation facilities. “We will keep citizens informed of any developments,” Lebanon’s Electricite du Liban said, adding that it was not yet possible to say how long the crisis would last.
Power outages have become the norm in Lebanon, and residents are accustomed to long power outages and the use of generators, so the recent power outages are not surprising.
The oil supply agreement with Iraq could not be reached due to the financial crisis. Prime Minister Najib Mikati led a delegation of ministers to Baghdad to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al-Sultanni to discuss resolving the crisis.
