Many of us are used to brushing our teeth before making a cup of coffee or eating a light breakfast. However, some people believe that it is better to do this procedure after a meal. American dentist Ferah Hamid explains when brushing your teeth will benefit the tooth enamel and when it will damage the tooth enamel and make it yellow, like smokers do.
According to dentists, brushing your teeth immediately after a meal may seem to freshen your breath, but it can further wear away the tooth enamel. In fact, the protective shell softens during food intake, especially when consuming foods high in acid. Brushing during this vulnerable period may cause wear on the softened enamel, which can cause increased sensitivity and the appearance of yellow plaque.
Instead, it’s better to carry out the hygiene routine after dinner, the doctor explains. First you eat, then wait half an hour – then you can safely go to the bathroom: this will help the saliva to naturally neutralize the acids in the mouth. In other words, it takes 30 minutes for the enamel to harden again.
“Brushing your teeth too early means that you actually absorb acid into the teeth, which accelerates the erosion of tooth enamel and weakens them over time. However, in the morning, it is better to do it differently,” the dentist emphasizes.
He adds that it’s best to brush your teeth before breakfast and rinse your mouth with plain water after meals. This will remove bacteria and plaque that has accumulated overnight. In turn, rinsing with water will help wash away food particles and acids without damaging tooth enamel.
Telegraf.news previously wrote that using toothpaste alone may not be enough to whiten teeth. Some people turn to professionals for this, and some crafty ones resort to home methods. It is worth noting that the latter usually cope no worse than the specials in cosmetic stores. Before you decide to spend a fortune on whitening, try to solve the problem at home using proven and safe methods. Let’s see what are the most effective among them.
