Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley yesterday warned young people that getting into a shootout with officers from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) would be a bad decision.
He spoke to journalists at the opening ceremony of the TT Agricultural Expo 2024 at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. Rowley said he did not want to comment too much on the police shooting incident that left six people dead, but the situation seemed to indicate that the police made some bad choices.
He added: “My message to young people is don’t be fooled into thinking, or let anyone lead you to believe, that you can resolve a conflict with the police or the defence force with a gun. That is a bad decision.
“If you arm yourself or associate with someone who is illegally armed and somehow believe that you’re going to prevail in a confrontation with police, that’s a mistake, that’s a bad decision. Don’t do it. Don’t do it to your family. Don’t do it to your sister. Don’t do it to this country. Don’t make decisions like that.”
The Prime Minister added: “We have to protect law-abiding people. Police are trained to shoot and if you threaten their lives, they will shoot you. When you arm yourself with a weapon like a gun, it means you have decided to use it. It does not make sense to think that law enforcement officers will wait to see what you do and how you use it. So, you are putting yourself in danger.”

As prime minister, Rowley said: “I urge young people not to make such decisions because it will only lead to a bad outcome for you, your family and all of us.”
August 14 Trinidad police shoot and kill sixincluding one woman, in Freeport.
Police said the victims were suspected of being involved in two home robberies in the central area.
They said five men and a woman opened fire on them and they returned fire in accordance with use of force policy, killing all six people at the scene.
