Just last August 14, I was lucky enough to experience a moment of great pain caused by human suffering. I compared it with another adventure I experienced on January 15, 2024. After the liturgy led by Archbishop Gonzalo de Villa, SJ, everyone went about their business and before my oldest daughter and I had to return to Cobán for work reasons, we decided to have a bite to eat at one of the few places where we could eat. It was open in the historic center of the city. In that very restaurant, we were already seated and heard the 21 cannon shots that sounded during the ceremony of handing over the baton to the new Commander-in-Chief of the Guatemalan Army. And we could not hold back our tears. The moments we have experienced since the second round of elections on August 20, 2023, justify our emotions.
Two things marked that moment. One of the diners said, “Those cannon shots bring joy, not fear.” I thought, “They even look sweet to me.” Another fact was equally important. As tears rolled down our cheeks, the lady in charge of the table stood in front of us and, without offering us menus, began to cry. Later we discovered that others had done the same. We were not the only ones affected by this psychological shock. Yes, this was a moment of human adventure.
Since then, while experiencing and enjoying moments like the one I had in the restaurant, I often asked myself why someone tried to prevent a new government from coming to power. I wondered why, and if they were the losers, instead of attacking in a roundabout way, they should start organizing and preparing for the next period of time. Do a SWOT exercise, understand your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, etc., and work for the good of the country. But I didn’t have an answer. It wasn’t until Wednesday, August 14, that I began to (probably) understand the complexity.
During the meeting of the campus directors of the Landivari University System, we began to notice a piece of news going viral related to a press conference held by the Director of Taxes (SAT) Marco Livio Díaz, accompanied by five mayors. It was about the case of B410. According to Carlos Raúl Koestler, Public Square: “Collector Marco Livio Díaz revealed on August 14 that the structure of 410 companies will cause the State to lose 300 million quetzales in tax revenues between 2021 and 2023.” 1
I thought at the time that if confirmed, we would be facing many moments of human suffering, because, in addition to the crimes that might be committed, these would occur during the Covid-19 pandemic, when people need help like never before, since the penultimate pandemic that occurred a hundred years ago.
The head of the State Administration of Taxation said that the complaint was filed in the appropriate place. This is appropriate.
A friend told me in response to my doubts: “The content of this news may be one of the reasons.” I don’t want to know the names or people. “I’m tired of the evil jingle.”
My reaction was this thought (remember my novel): “Human suffering and wealth.” I was absolutely right.
