We all know that some snakes are venomous and dangerous, and we know that Cobra snake Terrible and Black MambaBut have any of you heard of the “Gumtzen Insularis” snake? Well, it is a venomous snake in the family Viperidae, genus Humtzen. This snake is very rare in the wild, in fact it only lives on the island of Quemada Grande, off the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The English name of this species is: “golden lancehead”. The chance of death of a person bitten by it is 7% if not treated, and 0.5-3% if treated. The venom of this snake is similar to that of its relative Gumtzen Yarraka, and may be stronger. The consequences of bites by these snakes include swelling, pain, nausea and vomiting blood, formation of blood blisters, blood in urine, intestinal bleeding, kidney failure, brain hemorrhage and severe necrosis of muscle tissue.
As mentioned before, this snake is only found in the wild on an isolated tropical island, where the environment consists of rainforest, open space and small bushes, where the snake lives. Nicknamed “Snake Island”, the island is so dangerous that it is illegal for anyone to set foot on it. The Brazilian government prohibits reaching and boarding the island, which is about 145 kilometers off the coast of São Paulo, except for scientific expeditions. Snake Island is home to 2,000 to 4,000 golden lancehead vipers, which can reach up to 1 meter in length, with a density of about 1 to 5 snakes per square meter on the 430 dunam island.
