CHAPONDA: Everything is ready for the meeting

According to the DPP Congress Chairman, Dr. George Chaponda, the DPP Congress will be held this Sunday at Comesa Hall in Blantyre with a total of seven candidates participating.

At a press conference held today, Dr Chaponda disclosed that party chairman Professor Peter Mutharika, Northern vice president Jappi Mhango and national finance minister Edgar Tembo will not face competition for their respective posts.

However, several key positions will face competition, including the post of Secretary General, where the current Secretary General, Dr Clement Mwale, will face off against Peter Mukhitho.

The Vice Presidential post will also be contested in the Southern, Central and Eastern regions, with Dr Chaponda up against Joseph Mwanamveka in the Southern region, Alfred Gangata against Paul Gadama in the Central region and Bright Msaka against Lonnie Phiri Chijere in the Eastern region.

As delegates arrive in Blantyre tomorrow, Dr Chaponda assured that tight security measures will be put in place and accreditation procedures will be carried out for the expected 2,560 delegates.

This conference is seen as a key step taken by the DPP before the general election. The DPP hopes to use it to consolidate its position and prepare for the election.
