The annual Oshakati Mayor’s Cup has grown from strength to strength, with an initial investment of N$40,000 for the first tournament rising to N$92,000 for the fourth edition held in May this year.
This year’s allocation is N$10,000 more than last year’s.
Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango said that in order to enhance the appeal of the Games, the City Council has also set aside designated areas for young people to sell goods to participants and tourists of the Games.
The upcoming tournament will be held at the town’s Independence Stadium from May 9 to 12.
Hango said team registration is now open.
Giving Back
The tournament, open to residents of Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena and Oshikoto, aims to inspire sportsmanship in the four regions.
“We are committed to revitalizing sports in the northern part of the country. The scenes from last year’s competition showed that people are hungry for sports and as leaders we need to invest more in sports facilities,” Hango said.
The mayor said investing in sport was part of the council’s corporate social responsibility strategy and provided an opportunity to give back to the community.
“We are not just thinking about issuing municipal bills. We also want citizens to benefit from it,” he said.
Hanger said investing in sports is not just for entertainment value.
Encouraging young people to participate in sports can also help eliminate street crime by engaging young people in healthy activities and motivating them to invest in their future.
Grand Prize
The tournament will include junior football, legends football, women’s football and netball.
The junior football champion will receive a prize of N$22,000, a trophy and a gold medal.
The runner-up will receive a prize of N$14,000 and a silver medal.
The winner of the Legends Football category, which consists of players aged 37 years or above, will receive N9,000, a trophy and gold medal.
The runner-up will receive a prize of N$6,000 and a silver medal, while the semi-finalists will each receive a prize of N$3,000.
In the women’s football competition, the champion will receive N$4,000, a floating trophy and medal. The runner-up will receive N$3,000 and a silver medal, while the semi-finalists will receive N$1,500.
In the netball category, the winner will receive a cash prize of N$4,000, a trophy and gold medal, while the runner-up will receive N$3,000 and a silver medal, and the semi-finalists will receive N$1,500 each.
