KUWAIT CITY, August 15 (Xinhua) — Kuwait’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Omar Omar issued a decision to form a team headed by the Assistant Undersecretary for Companies and Business Licensing, and including the Chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Department, the Director of the Business Monitoring Department, the Director of the Licensing Monitoring Department and a business inspector.

The team will monitor private pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies to control the prices of medicines, including diabetes and heart drugs and some ointments, as the prices of these medicines have recently increased by about 85%. The team will also review the correspondence between companies and pharmacies and the Ministry of Health; in addition, it will coordinate with relevant institutions such as the Kuwait Municipality, the Ministry of Health, the Public Authority for Manpower, the Central Bank of Kuwait and the Ministry of Interior to inspect pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies to detect violations.

The panel will work for three months and then submit a detailed report to the Minister of Industry and Commerce. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has confirmed the cancellation of the licenses of 21 pharmacies; thus, the total number of pharmacies closed as part of the ongoing supervision of pharmacies has increased to 61.

This was made in accordance with the report and recommendations of the committee responsible for the implementation of Law No. 28/1996 and its amendments (Law No. 30/2016). The Ministry of Industry and Commerce reiterated its commitment to strictly implement the Ministry of Health’s regulations on the issuance of licenses to open private pharmacies to Kuwaiti pharmacists with at least five years of experience in the field.
