A mentally unstable man was found dead with up to seven slash wounds to his left shoulder and head. Just before noon today, Punta Gorda police were called to the oceanfront area near the Fishermen’s Co-op Pier, where they found 44-year-old Jennison Vernon lying face down in the water. Love News has learned that Vernon was a long-time resident of the city who had just been released from jail three weeks ago and had been homeless until his death. Senior reporter Paul Mahon interviewed the victim’s cousin, Daniel Vernon.

Daniel Vernon, cousin of the deceased: “We appreciate the community’s concern and that we have found the body of my cousin Dennison. Unfortunately, he was found by the beach with what appear to be cuts to his upper torso. The reports we received indicate that he was found earlier this afternoon. But be aware that Dennison was recently released from the Hattieville Police Station jail and has been in and out of jail for the past few years. He was a homeless man and people in town called him “Shilin” because he always felt like he was homeless and he was always begging for shelter because he got the name “Shilin” that everyone in the town called him. Considering the manner of his death, we only ask for the public’s cooperation in finding the killer or anyone who should be responsible for this because no matter what a person’s past is, we should not take the law into our own hands. Therefore, before asking for the public’s full support, we ask for the public’s assistance in finding the criminal because this type of crime can happen at your doorstep at any time.”
Vernon’s body was pulled from the water and taken to Punta Gorda Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 this afternoon.
