Former Lesotho Boxing Association (LeBA) president and retired captain Moses Kopo appeared in the Maseru Magistrate’s Court yesterday to faceSexual AssaultTOLL.
Kopo (46), from Ha-Bosofo, Maseru, was brought before Magistrate Nkhethoa Molapo, who read out histhisTOLL.
According to the allegationssheetMr. Copo, a businessman and retired soldier, is accused of unlawfully and forcibly removing the clothes of Malepantiti Rapholo, 31, on November 13, 2023, and exposing his private parts to her.
Magistrate Molapo informed Kopo that he was entitled to apply for bail and obtain legal representation.
The charge sheet reads: “On November 13, 2023, at or near Ha-Bosofo, Maseru, you intentionally sexually assaulted one Malepantiti Rapholo, aged 31, by touching her buttocks, removing her clothes without her consent, and exposing your penis without her consent.”
After reading out the charges, Mr. Coppo asked the complainant to return the money he claimed he had paid as a settlement in the matter.
“Your Excellency, if I am charged, I ask them to return my money which I have already paid as settlement in this matter…” Mr Kopo said but was interrupted by Magistrate Molapo who said these issues would be decided by the trial court.
“Today, that is not what we are here for. What I need to know now is whether you want to apply for bail. This court will not discuss whether you have paid bail,” said Magistrate Molapo.
Mr Copper then applied for bail, citing his significant responsibilities as a businessman and guardian of three children.
“I would like to apply for bail, your Excellency. I am a family man separated from my wife. I live alone and take care of three children. The oldest is 23, the second is 20 and the youngest is 10. Two of the children are still in school and the oldest has finished school.To these“I’m a liquor salesman,” said Mr. Copper.
The prosecution, represented by lawyer Hlao, did not oppose the bail application.
Mr Copo was then asked to pay bail of RM500.
“This court has heard your bail application and noted that there was no objection from the prosecution. The court also took into account your personal circumstances and the nature of the case you are facing. It has been ordered that you pay bail of RM500, not to interfere with witnesses, and attend remand. You will also be given the opportunity to obtain legal representation,” Justice Molapo said.
As the police had completed their investigation, Magistrate Molapo then remanded the case for retrial to August 27 to set a trial date.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kopo is considered one of the greatest boxers Lesotho has ever produced. He is one of three athletes from Lesotho to have won medals at the Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
Mr Coppo was appointed LeBA president in 2017, but his four-year term was shortened to two years, leading to his resignation in 2019.
