According to a spokesman for the country’s election headquarters, Mustafa Pourmohammadi, Sayyed Jalili, Mohammad Bakr Qalibaf, Alireza Zakhani, Amirhussein Ghazizad Hashemi and Masoud Madijian are qualified to participate in the 1403 presidential election.
Meanwhile, Ali Larijani, Wahid Hakanian, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Mehdad Bazarpash, Surat Mortazavi, Ishaq Jahangiri, Abbas Akhundi, Mohammad Shariatmadari and Abdel Nasser Hemti were among those who were ineligible, according to Mohsen Eslami, spokesman for the country’s election headquarters.
In addition, all registered members of Ibrahim Raisi’s cabinet, including Guidance Minister Mohammad Mehdi Esmaili, Housing and Urban Development Minister Mehdad Bazarpashi, and Labor and Cooperation Minister Sorat Mortazavi, were disqualified. Vice President and Head of Planning and Budget Organization Dawood Manzoor also resigned earlier.
An hour before the official announcement of the approval of the candidates, a spokesman for the Guardian Council announced that the Guardian Council’s qualification review had been completed and the list had been sent to the Ministry of the Interior.
Ishaq Jahangiri, Abbas Akhundi and Masoud Mezikian were rejected by the Guardian Council in the 1400 presidential election.
That same year, the Guardian Council also disqualified Ali Larijani from running in the elections.
Now, Vahid Hakkanian has been disqualified as one of the figures close to the leader of the Islamic Republic.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, one of Iran’s former presidents who was disqualified from the upcoming election, said his “most important motivation” for running was to “focus on solving economic problems” through “constructive interaction with the world.”
These remarks were made at a time when the economic performance of his predecessor’s government was widely criticized, and the country’s domestic and foreign macroeconomic policies were also in the hands of the leader of the Islamic Republic, who has always emphasized “hostility” with many people. He has not proposed a policy of “peaceful coexistence and constructive interaction with the world.”
The widespread disqualifications come as the Islamic Republic holds one of the least competitive elections in the world and amid widespread discontent that has led to a sharp drop in voter turnout at the ballot boxes in recent years.
In parallel with the controversy surrounding the early elections, the Islamic Republic newspaper recently acknowledged the low participation of Iranian citizens in the country’s recent elections, and advised the Guardian Council “not to act as it did before” and that “the election results should not be known in advance.”
Current Knesset deputy Masoud Mezikian, who served as deputy Knesset deputy and minister in Mohammad Khatami’s second government, is the only confirmed candidate with close ties to the reformists.
On Friday, a spokesman for Iran’s Reform Front introduced him as the ideal candidate for the front, along with Abbas Akhundi and Ishaq Jahangiri.
On Saturday, Reform Front leader Azhar Mansouri also considered the conditions for the organization and reformist parties to participate in the upcoming elections to confirm the qualifications of these candidates, saying that the Reform Front will not bear “non-reformist candidates.”
Although the Reform Front includes the main reformist parties, there has been no consensus among the parties in recent years, and in the 1400 presidential election, some of the parties supported Abdel Nasser Hemmati, while the Reform Front did not support any candidate.
This year’s presidential election will be held early on July 8, after Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province.
