“Make sure your copy is very simple, very direct. Use very simple language,” cautioned Afruh Rasheed, senior editor at Asiavision (AVN), who provided key strategies for writing news for an international audience during a webinar today attended by more than 50 participants, including AVN and ABU members.

Afruh stressed the importance of understanding your target audience. “Understand what you are delivering to your audience, who you are delivering it to, when they will consume it and how they will consume it,” Afruh said, stressing the need to consider factors such as time zones and programming schedules when delivering news for international broadcasts.

When choosing news stories, Afru recommends focusing on topics with “universal significance” and “global impact.” He noted that “impact, influence and connection are key news values of global relevance.”

Another focus was translating domestic copy for an international audience. Afruh stressed the need for writing to be “clear, precise and compelling,” avoiding “jargon or colloquialisms” that could confuse a global audience. He gave examples of how a lead could be reimagined to highlight global impact.

Afruh touched on the legal aspects of international news dissemination, urging attendees to be mindful of intellectual property rights, licensing restrictions and user-generated content. He announced that ABU’s Legal Manager Dr Seemantani Sharma will host a dedicated webinar on these topics next week.
