Update 1:45 p.m.
The Kelowna Fire Department was able to extinguish a house fire in the 2400 block of Sexsmith Road Thursday morning and rescue four people from inside.
KFD Captain Rob Skeldon said they received a call at 7:40 a.m. from a resident reporting four people were trapped in the basement.
When crews arrived on scene, they found one person trying to put out the fire with a garden hose while four people were still trapped inside.
Two were taken out of a basement window and two were taken out of a back door.
“The fire was a property fire and was not suspicious in nature,” Skeldon said. “A search was conducted to confirm that all occupants had safely evacuated the building and a number of pets were removed during the search.”
“The firefighters were not injured, but three people who attended the home were transported to hospital via BCAS. At this time, the occupants of the home are unable to return to the residence and will be assisted by ESS.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KFD dispatched three fire trucks, a rescue team, a safety team, a command team and a deputy chief, a total of 17 KFD personnel.
