On Friday, August 9, the Belize Junior Jaguars Women’s Football Team recorded their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Suriname Women’s Football Team in their fourth CONCACAF Women’s Under-15 Championship play-offs at the Alimalari Gomez Stadium in Trinidad.

Shanalee Smith’s double gave the Jaguars a 2-0 halftime lead before Suriname scored a goal at halftime to save face. The win moved Belize up to ninth place in the B League.

The Jaguars won their first game of the season last Thursday, 3-2, against Barbados. They lost to Honduras 5-1 on Monday and Cuba 1-0 on Tuesday. Belize finished third in Group E of the B League, while Honduras won its group match and won the B League championship final, defeating Guatemala 2-0 in the B League semifinals and Dominican Republic 1-0. In the other semifinal, Dominican Republic defeated Trinidad and Tobago 1-0; Trinidad won third place by defeating fourth-placed Guatemala 3-0.

In the A-League, the United States won the championship by defeating Canada 4-2 on penalties in the semifinals, and then defeated Mexico 3-0. Mexico defeated Costa Rica 3-2 in the semifinals to advance to the final and won the runner-up. Canada defeated Costa Rica 2-1 in the third place match, and Costa Rica won the fourth place.

In League C, Aruba defeated St. Lucia 2-1 to advance to the championship final, while Guadeloupe defeated Turks and Caicos Islands 7-6 on penalties to qualify for the third-place match.

(AMANDALA Editor’s Note: Importantly, Belize secured its membership in League B and avoided relegation to League C by finishing third in four-team Group E (along with Honduras, Cuba and Barbados). Meanwhile, League C champion Aruba will advance to League B, and League B champion Honduras will advance to League A.)
