WASHINGTON — U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed on Thursday that he supports new elections in Venezuela following the July 28 election last year, in which the ruling party declared President Nicolas Maduro re-elected, an outcome that was questioned internally and abroad.
Biden appeared briefly before the media before boarding the Marine One presidential helicopter.
When a reporter asked him whether he supported calls for new elections in Venezuela, he simply replied: “Yes, I do,” without providing further details.
This Thursday, in an interview with T Radio, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva proposed two possible solutions to the post-election crisis in Venezuela: the formation of a coalition government composed of members of Chavismo and members of the opposition, or the creation of new elections.
Lula’s comments drew an immediate reaction from Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who said he did not think it was “prudent” to call for new elections in Venezuela right now.
Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has suggested Venezuela create a “national front” like Colombia in the 20th century, with liberals and conservatives taking turns in power, as a “transitional” step toward a “final solution” to the crisis, an idea similar to Lula’s proposal for a coalition government.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner of the July 28 election without releasing voting records, while the Biden administration considered the winner to be rival Edmundo González Urrutia, according to minutes obtained by most opposition blocs.
After the Venezuelan election, the governments of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico began to contact each other to seek a solution to the crisis. This mediation effort was supported by the United States and other countries.
