New building of Matherford Primary School completed
Construction company Golden State Investments (Golden Island Services) has won a $754,995 contract to build a new primary school building in the village of Masefau, with a special ploughing ceremony to bless the land where the new building will be located. It is due to be completed on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
The Masefau Village gathered on Thursday morning for this special event hosted by the Fa’efeti, Mr. Tasha Atio’o, to welcome distinguished guests, which included the Honourable Governor Lemanu PS Mauga and his wife Ella Mauga, the Legislative Assembly, as well as the Cabinet and various leaders.
Mr. Sefa Sio, Senior Pastor of Masefau’s AOG (Assemblies of God) Church, was in charge of the opening request, and he told the story of Noah and his obedience to God in building the Ark. The Pastor said Noah’s obedience to God enabled him to build the Ark. The same is true this morning, because like Noah, the village of Masefau and the government of American Samoa are following God’s will to find and build a home for their children and grandchildren.
The Honourable Governor in his special address expressed his gratitude to the Masefau community for their dedication to the work which has enabled this important building to be completed, not only for the sons and daughters of Masefau but also for Masausi and Selele.
Lemanu said the government was very interested in supporting projects that benefit families, communities and the territory. Lemanu also said he wanted to express his gratitude to the community for their hard work in making this event possible despite being a long way from Masefau. He also said his intention was that the building would be useful for children’s education and the community.
According to Faleosina Voigt, director of the Department of Public Works (DPW), the project will be 80 feet long and 60 feet wide.
In the words of the Director of Education (ASDOE), Mr. Samson Asaeli, who stressed the importance of mental health, especially for children, this led to the ASDOE to propose the idea of funding this building to serve the school in Masefau and maintain the mental health of children.
In his speech that morning, His Excellency Maga thanked the governor and the government for their generosity. Maga said that despite the difficult times, Masfu appreciated the priority given to the needs of the children because their education was very important.
The work is expected to begin on August 12, 2024 and is expected to take eight months to complete.

To reduce the spread of influenza (including Covid19), it is important to learn the correct way to cough and sneeze. If you cough or sneeze, turn away or cover your face, or use a tissue, throw the tissue in the trash immediately. If you don’t have a tissue, it’s best to use the sleeve of your shirt or blouse and cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue.
But in all these things, cleaning your hands properly after sneezing or coughing is very important.
