The Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Job Creation published the new National Minimum Wage Order in the Government Gazette last week.

The adjustments will be phased in over three years, with the first increase taking effect on January 1, 2025.

After hearing from the wages board, Minister Utoni Nujoma decided that from next year the most underpaid employees (excluding soldiers, police, prison officers and members of the Namibian Central Intelligence Agency) should receive higher wages.

From next year, domestic workers will be paid a minimum of 12 naira per hour, rising to 15 naira in 2026 and 18 naira in 2027.

Special attention has also been paid to farm workers, who must be paid at least 10 naira per hour by January 1 next year, 14 naira per hour in 2026 and 18 naira per hour from January 1, 2027. No deductions may be made for food rations and housing, nor for equipment or other necessary inputs to carry out their work.

Overtime and work on Sundays or public holidays must also be paid extra.

According to Government Gazette No. 8409, the Wages Board will review the order every two years, particularly taking into account inflation.
