Pago Pago – American Samoa
The President of the American Samoa Boxing Association (ASBA), Mr. Paepaetele Mapu Jamias, expressed his strong support for the International Boxing Association (IBA) in its fight against the International Olympic Committee (IOC), following their decision to pursue medals in the women’s boxing competition in Paris at the last Olympic Games.
Papetele said independent research had confirmed that the dispute between the IBA and the IOC was sparked by the 2016 Rio Olympics, when some judges were accused of accepting money.
The IBA has fined all referees involved and is conducting its own investigation. The IBA is also investigating allegations against some of its personnel that they misappropriated funds.
The decision comes after the IOC announced it would disband the International BA if no changes were made.
But the IOC has now stepped up to regulate international boxing events, including the 2021 Olympics in Japan and the recent tournament in Paris.
However, the situation further upset the IBA and the IOC re-elected Omar Kremlev as president in 2022. Kremlev is a Russian businessman with ties to Kremlin groups opposed to the IOC and its president, Thomas Bach.
But in June 2023, the International Olympic Committee voted to dissolve the IBA so that it no longer represents international professional boxing.
The IBA responded to the decision, saying it was a very wrong decision and reflected the true political nature of the IOC. The IBA also said that despite the many challenges, the association remains committed to the development of the organization, maintaining its independence and the organization of international sports.
IBA leaders said they had a legal right to continue working and were ready to defend that right before any organization.
While the International Olympic Committee has governed the sport since the 2021 Olympics in Japan, the International Boxing Association continues to regulate international sports, such as last year’s Women’s World Championships in India, where two female boxers competed after they passed tests to confirm whether they were male or female.
In an interview with the president of the American Samoa Boxing Association, he said the real essence of the problem is that the IOC does not take the safety of the women they fight with seriously and does not confuse whether they are men or women.
Papetele said the issue of safety for female boxers became apparent during the fight between Italy’s Angela Carini and Algeria’s Imane Khelif, when Carini stopped the fight just 46 seconds into the fight because Imane’s punches were so powerful that they broke his “chin strap.”
“I was in constant pain in my face and nose and I couldn’t breathe,” Carini explained to the international media. “I thought about my family, I looked at my brother sitting in the chicken, I went to my corner and stopped the fight.”
Carini said he had just been hit by a very powerful punch. When the referee raised Khalif’s hand, Carini did not even shake Khalif’s hand, but knelt down and cried devoutly.
Papetler said the fight promoted safety issues as well as women’s issues because men were allowed to serve as their fighting partners inside the ropes.
Mr. President argued that Khalif and Lin Yuting from Taiwan did not pass the (gender) test, which they underwent in Istanbul in 2022 and India in 2023, respectively, and after announcing this to the International Olympic Committee, the Olympics, however, were not held in Paris, but they did not make plans because their goal was to welcome anyone.
Papetele also said the IOC was not concerned about safety or fairness for women. But the IOC responded by trying to discredit the so-called “arbitrary test” by saying the boxing rules in Paris were the same as in Rio and Tokyo, where you give weight to the athlete’s “sex”, which is in his passport.
The IOC President clarified their position on this issue during a meeting with the media on August 2, 2024, and the media reported his statement that this issue is a women’s struggle involving two women who were born women. As women, with passports that indicate their female identity and who have fought for a long time, they are women. This is what it really means to be a woman.
He also mentioned that there has never been anyone who was unclear about their being female. But in the current situation, some people seem to want to be female, and the president invites them to come up with a scientific explanation for the new role of a woman.
He also said how can a person who was born, raised, competes and holds a passport as a woman not be called a woman.
He also mentioned the words of an Italian female boxer who fought alongside an Algerian fighter, a difference that saddened the soul and created a heart of love for her fighting partner.
The president also said that this is the Olympic spirit. It is a spirit of doing your best for your opponent regardless of winning or losing.
However, scientific research has confirmed that some female boxers are born with “XY chromosomes” – which only males have – but they suffer from “disorders of sex development (DSD)”, which affects babies who are born with different organs as their human organs.
Papa Etlai said that apart from the people of Algeria and Taiwan and “transgender people” who admire the Algerian female fighters, most people in the world, including her, do not like this fight.
Papetele also said that one does not need to be a scientist to see the male body of the Algerian female fighter at a glance, and if it is confirmed that she has “XY chromosomes”, it is wrong because he is fighting a woman. To prove this, the International Olympic Committee must form another team to fight against Kheerfi and Yu Ting, and then allow all “transgenders” to participate in the competition.
The ASBA president expressed regret that the IOC allowed such a situation, which could affect the lives of women, and Paepaetele also mentioned that combat is the most dangerous sport in the Olympic program.
Mr Gabriele Martelli, chairman of the IBA Referees Committee, said such a decision could be fatal.
