The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) has issued a warning to Airlink (Pty) Ltd, claiming that the airline is not authorised to operate flights between Gaborone and Cape Town. The advisory came after the CAAB expressed concerns about the airline’s advertising and ticket sales on unauthorised routes.
In an official statement released on August 12, 2024, the CAAB confirmed that Airlink had violated Regulations 5 and 7 of the Civil Aviation (Licensing of Air Services) Regulations 2012. As a result, the airline was fined for non-compliance and ordered to immediately withdraw all advertisements related to the Gaborone-Cape Town route. In addition, Airlink was ordered to immediately stop selling tickets on the route.
“The Authority’s role is to protect consumers and the public by encouraging compliance with civil aviation regulations. Non-compliance will be taken seriously and dealt with vigorously,” the statement read.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) is a statutory body established under the Civil Aviation Authority Act 2004 and continues to operate under the Civil Aviation Act No. 11 of 2011. The Authority is responsible for promoting the safe, regular, reliable and efficient use of civil aviation in Botswana. It is also responsible for regulating air transport, providing air navigation services, managing airports and advising the government on all aspects of civil aviation.
The Civil Aviation Authority oversees the operations of Botswana’s major airports, including Sir Seretse Khama Airport, Kasane Airport, PG Matante Airport and Maun International Airport, as well as other strategic airports across the country.
