NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) Bahamas Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell said Prime Minister Philip Davis was “ordered” to stay in bed because he apparently disobeyed doctors’ orders and was overworked, having undergone surgery in the United States a few weeks ago.
“So, you know he just had surgery a few weeks ago, and as usual, we don’t listen to the doctors and overexert ourselves. So, he was ordered to stay in bed for three days. So … I apologize on his behalf,” Mitchell said, explaining Davis’ absence from the church service celebrating Fox Hill Day on Tuesday.
Mitchell, who represents Fox Hill in parliament, told reporters that Premier Davis, who underwent corrective surgery for sciatica, chaired a cabinet meeting earlier this week but “took a break early”.
Health Minister Dr Michael Darville said last month that Prime Minister Davis experienced excruciating pain after standing for months and eventually underwent successful surgery in the United States.
But Mitchell told reporters the prime minister may have overexerted himself shortly after the operation.
“He’s fine. He’s had back surgery, you know he’s been at a couple of public events and so on. So, you really should be more careful. We’ve been telling him to slow down, slow down, slow down. He’s going to listen to the doctors,” Mitchell said.
“He’ll get back up and keep running,” he added.
