Some cities in Ecuador have become hubs of activity for criminal gangs that dominate through extortion, loan-for-loan, local and international drug trafficking, and even smuggling.
Telenoticias visited the streets of Durán, Guayas province, one of the places where Ecuadorian authorities are currently intervening most (See attached Telenoticias video).
While we were on the scene, the country’s authorities deployed an operation designed to reduce homicides, capture persons of interest, and combat international drug trafficking.
According to the Ecuadorian Organized Crime Observatory, the country was the most violent in Latin America in 2023, with 44.5 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.
One of the main fears of Costa Rican judicial authorities is that the war between criminal groups will move to prisons, as has happened in Ecuador, as we will discuss in the second part of this report.
