NIA Charleston Nevis (August 14, 2024)– The Honourable Prime Minister Mark Brantley expressed gratitude that the island of Nevis suffered no major damage or disruption to utility services during the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto on Tuesday, August 13.
“Now that Tropical Storm Ernesto has passed, we are assessing the damage and the reports so far show that we have had some minor damage, such as downed trees, minor damage to people and property; certainly no deaths, no injuries, so I believe we should really thank God for once again sparing us from the worst of it.”
The Prime Minister thanked the “hard-working public servants” who ensured the island was in a state of preparedness and braved the storm risks to ensure service was restored where power was out.
“I would like to congratulate our public services, especially the water department, who kept working during the storm. NEVLEC also experienced some outages, but these were quickly resolved. Power supply remained normal in most parts of the island, and for the affected parts, NEVLEC reported as early as last night that 99% of the power on the island had been restored,” he said, while also praising the staff of the Solid Waste Management Department who ensured that garbage was collected on time during the severe weather.
He also thanked the private sector for giving employees the opportunity to care for their families and prepare for personal storms.
Prime Minister Brantley praised the island’s resilient infrastructure and the capabilities of its agencies and departments, which enabled Nevis to weather the storm.
“I think our response shows our resilience and certainly the resilience of our infrastructure so far, so we want to continue to build better as we move forward, knowing that we are in an area that is high risk for storms of this nature. I think it’s critical that we be prepared if we are to weather the worst of the weather.”
Following the all-clear alert from disaster officials, crews from the Nevis Electricity Company (NEVLEC), the Department of Public Works and Communications, the Water Department, and the Fire and Rescue Department have been patrolling Nevis to ensure the road network is open and any issues related to utility service failures are rectified quickly.
