Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has said that the Afghan Taliban government should not choose Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) over its old neighbour and brother Pakistan.
According to Pakistani journalists, Munir made the remarks while delivering a speech at the Pakistan Independence Day parade on August 14.
He also discussed the situation on Pakistan’s western border with Afghanistan and the situation in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.
The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for a series of deadly incidents across Pakistan in recent months, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which have primarily targeted Pakistani security forces.
Pakistan has repeatedly claimed that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has safe havens in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and that the Taliban government is not cooperating with Islamabad to fight the group.
But Afghanistan’s Taliban government has denied the charges, saying it is not responsible for maintaining Pakistan’s security.
Earlier, the Taliban government brokered peace talks between Islamabad and the Pakistani Taliban leadership in 2022, and the two sides temporarily ceased fire, but the ceasefire did not last long and the TTP resumed a series of attacks on Pakistani security forces.
Pakistan’s Interior Ministry said at the time that the TTP had regrouped and drawn up war plans during the talks and temporary ceasefire.
The Pakistan Army Chief also stressed that Pakistan wants to establish good relations with its neighbors, including Afghanistan.
Two days ago, the Taliban and Pakistani border guards clashed at the Torkham crossing.
The clashes began after Taliban forces expanded their positions in the Gorki district and came under fire from Pakistani troops, and Taliban forces retaliated, the office of the Taliban governor of Nangarhar province said in a statement on Monday.
Three people were reported dead in the clashes and the Torkham crossing is currently closed to passengers.
