Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada went missing in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 2009. The man worked at the now-closed No Frills supermarket and was trapped behind a refrigerator in 2019. His body was found that year, but the circumstances of his death have only now been reconstructed through simulation.
The day after Thanksgiving, Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada left his home, visibly distraught, and found himself trapped in a narrow gap between a supermarket refrigerator and a wall. He spent his final moments there, the noise from the refrigerator drowning out his cries for help. When the man was not found, authorities declared him missing.
The case took a bizarre turn 10 years later when his remains were found during the evacuation of the supermarket after it had closed, from which point on, the identity of the deceased could only be confirmed through DNA testing.
One of the questions associated with this case is how someone could have been trapped behind a refrigerator and unable to escape, especially in a busy store where, according to many, it is impossible for a human body to go unnoticed. Skeptics say that even if the noise of the refrigerator drowned out the cries for help, people should have been able to detect the smell later. While the last question remains unanswered, recent simulations have revealed how the man could have ended up in such an impossible situation and in what terrible conditions he was trapped.
According to former employees, it was not uncommon for employees to climb to the top of the refrigerators, which are about 12 feet high, to load items. The same was true for Murillo-Moncada.
He may have slipped on top of the machine, fell headfirst behind the fridge, and became trapped between the wall and the fridge.
