Since ancient times, Zoliňa has been considered a holiday when people give thanks for all the good things of summer, get together with friends and spend as much time as possible in the community. It is believed that those who do not take part in the August feast will not have a good year. Therefore, if you want to take care of your future, the largest open-air flower and herb festival invites you to experience the real magic of herbs. Well, in order for the celebration to not only go smoothly, but also be fun, Giedrius Klimkevčius, the chancellor of the Pakruoj estate, shares the most important tips.
- Focus on Magic Plants
No matter where you are, the attention to these natural wonders never stops at Pakruojos Estate, a 15-hectare estate covered by a veritable sea of vegetation. There are not only very beautiful and fragrant flowers, but also strong and even dangerous ones. Just looking at one of the largest flower arrangements of the festival – the sculpture “Pakas” – is enough to give you goosebumps. Rue is planted here, sprinkled with castor flowers, honeysuckle, Veratrum, sedge and even valerian. They are all extremely attractive and together create a dreamy skin, but if you get too close, they can pose a risk to human health. Festival guests are invited to admire the flowers up close, but whether to touch them is not only everyone’s choice, but, as the organizers say, it’s a dangerous game with magical plants.
- The largest bouquet of herbs in Lithuania
For those who want to feel the spirit of Žoliņi and follow the traditions of this festival, Pakruojo Manor will be the best choice. Did you know that in the past, people believed that if someone did not have a bouquet of herbs in his hand during the Midsummer Festival, the devil would put his tail on his palm? During the festival, bouquets and various flower arrangements await visitors in almost every corner. The vegetation here echoes the birth of the universe, the earth is full of life, and the garden is full of plants.
Interestingly, this year’s utopian perennial flowers include not only countless types of summer flowers, but also crops that reflect the theme of the festival – “de’Žavu among crops”. The estate representative introduced that the completely different plant cultures are not only amazing, but also affect the consciousness of the viewers, bringing experiential psychological comfort. In Lithuanian culture, the purpose of each herb garden (even the smallest one) is related to the safety of the family, so looking at the large selection of plants here will also bring emotional happiness.
- Incredible performances by artists
As in previous years, this year the festival “Flowers, Art and Love” at the Pakruoj estate is supplemented by shows created by professional artists. Here, in a sea of flowers, visitors embark on a romantic journey through memories awakened by professional actors who transform famous characters from Shakespeare’s poems every day – Puck the Mischievous Spirit, Titania the Fairy Queen, Oberon the Fairy King. Friends who want to test their acting skills and overcome stage fright can try the possibilities of mechanical theater with the actors. Then, for those who crave extreme sensations and images, the imagination of acrobats from Italy, Colombia, France and Switzerland is stimulated. Fearless artists bravely climb ropes and show incredible stunts, as if touching the sky, forcing visitors to temporarily break away from the gray daily life and believe in miracles.
- Entertainment – even for the youngest children
For those who are considering where to spend their Zolinje holidays with children, the Pakruojos estate also offers a range of entertainment and activities specifically for children. Young visitors are invited to get to know a large group of inhabitants of the estate farm: not only horses, sheep, rabbits or birds, but also the beloved two-headed camel. The smallest visitors will also be attracted by the highlight of the playground – the Flower Castle, where they can play the role of real princes and princesses. There is also an old horse-drawn carousel that spins dreamily. During the specified time, young visitors to the Flower Festival can swing for free.
- Secrets and Curiosities of Manor Life
In addition to a romantic stroll along the garden paths, festival organizers encourage you not to miss the opportunity to visit the estate and get to know how the courtiers of that time lived. This is perfectly told even by several shows offered by the estate, the center of which is the story of the history, development and culture of the largest estate in Lithuania. A visit to the punishment cellar and panopticon built on the estate, where exotic collections of natural and human anomalies accumulated by the elite of that time are displayed, and a visit to the so-called Salon of Fortuna, which fascinates with its spells and magic, will undoubtedly leave a deep impression.
- A unique world of fragrance
For those who consider “Žolinė” the most fragrant summer vacation and spend the day simply mixing with all the scents that nature offers, a visit to the Parkroj Manor Perfume Factory is an absolute must. Its appearance is linked to the 19th century, when the famous perfumer Zacks visited here, who created perfumes for several years in the perfume factory he founded here, growing local and imported herbs himself, producing essential oils, refreshing and aromatic waters, etc. Today, scents once again dominate in the restored perfume factory: flower hydrosols, rose water, natural aromas inspired by the manor’s beauty traditions, and even elixirs of youth are produced here!
- “Sponsors” of Ancient Crafts and Artisans
Although today visitors to the estate are not lacking in comfort and everything is available here, it would be a real loss not to take advantage of this opportunity to travel to the past, at least temporarily. The artisans here invite you not only to see the progress and results of their work, but also to try their hand at their creations. Visit the wool carding factory, where you can make antique shoes or accessories from colored wool, visit the potters who offer to buy pots fired and decorated with plants, and enjoy the delicacies of the beekeepers who work here and offer honey made from local flowers.
- Wearing court clothes
If you still lack the senses and want to feel the magic of flowers not only with your eyes but also with your body, then dress like a courtier. The manor costumers working in the costume room, under the supervision of the manor tailors, invite you to go back in time for at least a few minutes and feel the beauty, elegance and historical spirit of that era in luxurious clothes, with unexpected accessories or interesting details. When you visit the costume shop, you will also get to know the details of the history of costumes and the secrets of the clothes of noble men and women.
- Unique photos of the era to remember
You can record your visit to Pakruojs Manor not only with your mobile phone, but also with an antique camera in the manor’s photo studio. The photographers working here will invite you to an extraordinary photo session, during which you will pose like a 19th century courtier. Interestingly, you will be able to personally observe the creation of a photo in an atypical photo studio!
- DewariVarious flavors
According to the rector G. Klimkevičius, you can enjoy a whole day in the vast territory of the manor without worrying about going hungry, as there are even several dining options. According to the representative, all of them are very atypical and remind people of the court era, so staying in them is like a separate festive experience.
“Visitors to the festival will easily find a tavern that serves a hearty lunch, as well as an estate teahouse that invites you to sit down and have a hot drink, such as cumin giri. You will be surprised, but even here, especially during the Herb Festival, the variety of flavors in dishes and drinks complements the local plants and the spices made from them. So, this year, during the last summer vacation, we invite you to experience as many different experiences as possible”, promises the rector of the Pakruojo estate.
