San José, August 14 (Elpaís.cr) – The National Council of Rectors (CONARE) has decided to continue negotiations with government ministers in the Presidential Palace on the Special Higher Education Fund (FEES) for 2025.
The leaders of public universities proposed that the next meeting be held at the Presidential Palace this Friday, August 16.
“Public education is suffering from the worst crisis in 40 years. The National Council of Rectors has been working on several fronts to comprehensively overcome the gaps facing Costa Rican higher education as well as primary and secondary education,” the entity said in a press release.
The cooperation agenda we are promoting in the FEES 2025 negotiations includes 41 items covering many topics such as agriculture, science and technology, security, justice and peace, and of course education.
“Today, we reiterate to Ministers Ana Catarina Mueller, Laura Fernández, Paula Bogantes and Noji Acosta, and to all the people of Costa Rica, that this commitment remains intact and cannot be questioned in the current process of negotiations,” Conor said.
It emphasizes that public education at all levels is considered one of the essential factors for the consolidation of democracy and the promotion of sustainable development, which is key to achieving greater justice and social equity, and that no intransigence that seeks to divert this cause from the full defence of democratic rights must be adopted. This is recorded in the articles of our Magna Carta.
Therefore, “we firmly defend the importance of dialogue and demonstrate this through our agreement to continue the process of negotiating costs for 2025. Today, we propose that the representatives of the executive branch in the Liaison Committee meet next Friday, August 16, at their proposed headquarters in the Presidential Palace.
“We reiterate our presence, as well as the participation of representatives of public universities as previously agreed, confident that respect, cordiality and good faith will prevail, as has characterized the meetings held so far.”
Furthermore, in view of the repeated absence of a proposed agenda for the fifth session of the Liaison Committee, Conor suggested that a venue and date be set for the conclusion of the negotiation process.
In addition, “a response was received from the Minister of Finance to the counter-proposals made by the public universities at the third and fourth meetings of the Liaison Committee”.
“This process is in the national interest and when education wins, Costa Rica wins! Let us together demonstrate the understanding and political maturity of university representatives and administrations,” the rectors concluded.
