WARSAW: Poland confirmed on Wednesday (August 14) that it had received an arrest warrant from Germany for a Ukrainian man reportedly a suspect in the 2022 Nord Stream gas pipeline sabotage incident.
German media previously reported that German prosecutors had issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diver named Volodymyr Z, who they believed helped place the explosive device on the pipeline.
The Polish prosecutor’s office told AFP that it received an arrest warrant for the man in June “in order to bring charges against him in Germany”.
“Ultimately, Volodymyr Z was not detained because he left the Polish territory in early July this year, crossing the Polish-Ukrainian border,” the prosecutor’s office said in an email.
At the end of September 2022, four large natural gas leaks were discovered on two Nord Stream pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm.
The pipelines have become a focus of geopolitical tensions since Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe in suspected retaliation for Western sanctions imposed over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Polish prosecutors said the suspect left Poland because German judicial authorities did not “include him in the database of wanted persons” when issuing an arrest warrant.
“The Polish border guards had no knowledge of this and no reason to detain Vladimir Z,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP.
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters since Russia invaded the country in 2022.
