The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has so far delivered 220 metric tonnes of relief maize to Luangwa District.
The district commissioner, Luke Chikani, said the district received 160 metric tonnes of relief maize in addition to the 60 metric tonnes previously allocated.
The district commissioner made these remarks while overseeing the distribution of 160 metric tonnes of relief maize in the district.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the livelihoods of the people of the country are safeguarded.
“Your President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, cares about you and despite the drought, the government is ensuring that no one dies of hunger,” Mr Chikani said.
He further assured the people that the government was opening Food Reserve Agency (FRA) outlets in all the wards of the region.
Mr Chikani explained that the FRA outlets will facilitate access to maize for community members.
The District Commissioner cautioned the beneficiaries to use the goods for their intended purpose.
“Don’t sell the corn, use it for consumption,” he stressed.
Beneficiaries, on behalf of the village, Kapiyanikka headmen, Cecilia Phiri and Dominic Njobu thanked the government for the kind gesture.
“May God continue to bless our president who keeps us from starvation,” they said.
20% of the relief corn will be used to help patients with chronic diseases, women and child-headed households, the elderly, the disabled and other vulnerable groups, and 80% will be used for work-for-relief.
