12 August 2024 (Kigali/Luanda) – Sudan’s de facto leader Abdel Fattah Burhan reiterated his commitment to a stalled peace deal with rival paramilitary forces on Monday during a visit to Rwanda and Angola, where US-backed efforts to revive the deal have failed.

Sudan’s ambassador to Rwanda said Burhan told Rwandan President Paul Kagame that he was committed to the Jeddah Declaration signed in May 2023.

The deal, brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States, calls for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of troops and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces from urban areas.

However, fighting continued in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country, with the two sides failing to agree on terms for the army to take part in internationally backed peace talks scheduled for Monday in Geneva.

Sudan’s ruling Transitional Sovereign Council said in a statement that Burhan also held talks in Luanda with Angolan President Joao Lourenco, during which he accused the Rapid Security Forces of failing to implement the Jeddah agreement.

The RSF, led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti, welcomed the proposed Geneva talks. In a televised address, Hemeti said the RSF would attend the talks “with all its heart” and wanted peace to be achieved.

The Sudan conflict that broke out in April this year has killed thousands of people, displaced millions and triggered a major humanitarian crisis.
