President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday donated K450 million to six public universities in the country through the Presidential Philanthropy Initiative to support the education of needy university students and rebuild the Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje which was destroyed by Cyclone Freddy.

The ceremony took place at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
Of the K450 million donation, six public universities will share K225 million, while the other half will be donated to Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje for the construction of two classroom blocks and an administration building.
The funds were raised at the Presidential Charity Golf Tournament held at the Lilongwe Golf Club in October 2023.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Chakwera described the donation as an investment and said education was the foundation of development.

He added that human capital development was critical to achieving Malawi’s Vision 2063 agenda.
The students we help today, the president said, “are the leaders, innovators and change-makers of the future.”
He then thanked all the companies and individuals who had donated to the fund.

The Director of Preparedness and Response of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Rev. Moses Chimpepo, commended Chakwera for his commitment to comforting the people affected by the disaster.
Mzuzu University Vice-Chancellor Welsh Singini commended Chakwera for lending a helping hand to needy students, saying many students face a lot of financial problems.
Student representative Japhet Kapalepale said the money will help them focus on their academic goals instead of wasting time thinking about how to make ends meet.
“We can’t concentrate on our studies if we are hungry. Thank you very much for your kindness,” he said.
He advised the beneficiaries to strive to get an education and support the aspirations of Malawi’s Vision 2063 agenda.
Chairman of the Presidential Charity Golf Programme, Vizenge Kumwenda, commended Chakwera for his keenness in helping needy students in public universities.
