13 August 2024 (Geneva) – The United States will continue its efforts to secure a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan despite the Sudanese government’s refusal to participate in talks, US Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perillo said on Monday.
The Sudanese government refused to attend the Saudi-Swiss talks in Geneva, citing the need to ensure the implementation of the May 2023 Jeddah Agreement, and opposed the UAE’s participation in the talks.
Perillo expressed disappointment over Sudan’s decision, saying, “We could have achieved more if the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) had decided to send a high-level delegation, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has agreed to do.”
He also condemned the shelling of civilian targets by the Rapid Security Forces, calling the resulting deaths “unacceptable.”
“These alleged violations of international humanitarian law will be addressed during the upcoming negotiations in Switzerland,” Perillo said.
Despite the challenges, the United States remains committed to pursuing peace and humanitarian relief for the Sudanese people.
“The United States and its partners stand with the Sudanese people and do everything they can to stop the violence and expand humanitarian access,” Perillo said.
